Vitamin E is necessary for various functions in the body. A healthy heart needs a lot of vitamin E, as well as its role in preventing heart disease. Vitamin E will limit the amount of oxidation of LDL cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein) in the blood. Oxidation causes blockage of the arteries, thus triggering a heart attack. By inhibiting this process, the vitamin E also acts to prevent heart attacks.

Vitamin E is essential to protect cell membranes from the dangers of free radicals present in the body. Without vitamin E the cell membrane will be damaged and this can cause serious health problems, including cancer. The reason that vitamin E is very effective against free radicals because of the fat-soluble so it can be absorbed into the cell membrane. Vitamin E is also very important for the immune system.
 
The recommended daily amount for vitamin E depends on the person's weight. This is related to the fact that more and more foods that contain fat so more vitamin E needed by the body. However, some foods that actually contain natural vitamin E is vegetable oil, wheat germ and nuts. The reason is what causes most people should consume vitamin E supplements because the food is consumed does not meet the requirement of vitamin E.

Vitamin E deficiency did not directly affect the body. But after years of vitamin E deficiency may be detected damage to the spinal cord or retina of the eye but this is very rare. Most people get enough vitamin E intake from normal diet but it is important to note, the food we eat must contain less fat to assist in the absorption of vitamin E.

There are some medical conditions that can cause a deficiency of vitamin E:

• Cystic fibrosis causes a person cannot digest fats properly, resulting in absorption of vitamin E is reduced.
• Crohn's disease causes decreased levels of vitamin E absorption
• Some forms of liver disease can also lead to problems of vitamin E absorption, especially through the intestines.
Of course, fat (within normal limits) is needed to assist the process of absorption of vitamin E in adequate amounts. Anyone who has a low fat diet should increase the intake of vitamin E in accordance with the body needs in order to prevent heart attacks.
